Can Scabies jump from cat to humans?

My boyfriend (who is often too compassionate for his own good) brought home a stray kitten a couple of nights ago. Seeing as we were thinking about getting a kitten anyway, we decided to take the little guy to the vet to get checked out. Turns out he has Scabies/Mange. Is it super contagious to humans? The vet said it was unusual for it to happen, but what does that really mean?
